ERPNext

ERPNext vs Odoo in 2026: an honest comparison from a team that implements both

Licensing, total cost of ownership, manufacturing depth and customization — how ERPNext and Odoo really compare, and how to choose.

ERPNext and Odoo are the two most popular open-source ERP platforms. We implement both, and the question we hear most is simple: which one should we choose?

1. Licensing and total cost

ERPNext is fully open-source under GPL v3 — every module, every user, no licence fee. Odoo has a free Community edition, but many features businesses rely on (full accounting, some manufacturing and studio tools) are in Odoo Enterprise, which is licensed per user per month.

Over five years, a 50-user company typically spends far less on ERPNext because there is no per-user cost.

2. Functional depth

Both are strong. ERPNext shines in manufacturing, inventory valuation, accounting and HR & payroll out of the box. Odoo's strength is its very large app marketplace covering niche needs.

3. Customization and upgrades

ERPNext is built on the Frappe Framework: custom fields, workflows and full apps can be added without touching core code, so upgrades stay smooth. Odoo customizations are Python modules that often need porting between major versions.

How to decide

  • Choose ERPNext if you want a complete ERP with low TCO, strong manufacturing/distribution and freedom to customize.
  • Choose Odoo if you need specific marketplace apps or your team already runs on Odoo.
